Friends of the Hilo Public Library
About Us
The Hilo Library and Reading Room Association was incorporated in 1896.   HPL Friends are people who value reading, books and libraries.  They help Hilo Library provide the best possible service to the community by supplying volunteer and financial assistance.  The Friends also offer free workshops several times a year on how to use the Internet to search the Hawaii State Public Library catalog.

Why Does the Library Need Friends?
The State Legislature provides funding for the basic needs of the library, but private support from the Friends is essential in these days of budget cuts to supply funding for special needs, growth and expansion.  The Friends provide financial support for extra books and magazines, music CDs and movie DVDs, library equipment, public programs and workshops.  The Friends raise money through membership dues, book sales, donations and Internet book sales.

How Can You Help the Friends?
  • Join today.  For only $10 you can experience the satisfaction of supporting your own public library and save 10% off special collection items during our book sales.
  • Donate your second hand books to the Hilo Library.  Your books are "recycled" by volunteers to provide the inventory for our book sales.
  • Volunteer your time to help staff our book sales and/or to help process the donations we receive throughout the year.
